The Bangladesh National Museum

The Bangladesh National Museum is one of the largest museum in South Asia. It is a four-storied building with a total exhibition area of more than 20,000 sqm. and 44 galleries. Present Bangladesh National Museum (1983) is the successor to the Dhaka Museum. Lord Carmichael, the Governor of Bengal inaugurated the Dhaka Museum on 7th August 1913. Mr. M. Bonhamcarter and Nicholas D. Beatson Bell played a very significant role in establishing this museum.Bangladesh National Museum was shifted to its present premises at Shahbag near Dhaka University in 1983. The Museum has a rich Library, an Audio-visual section, a Conservation Laboratory and a Photographic section.
Buddhist and Brahminical stone sculptures, architectural pieces, Arabic and Persian inscriptions and pieces of calligraph are the most significant objects of this museum.

Lalbagh Fort


Lalbagh Fort (1678 A.D.)


The lalbagh fort is another attraction of Dhaka as well as Bangladesh. It was built in 1678 A.D. by Prince Mohammad Azam, son of Mughal emperor Aurangazeb.


The fort was the scene of bloody battle during the first war of independence (1857) when 260 sepoys stationed here backed by the people revolted against British forces.


Outstanding among the monuments of the Lalbagh are the tomb of Pari Bibi (Fairy lady),


Lalbagh Mosque,


Audience Hall and a grave of Mirza Bangali with two unknown child grave,


Hammam of Nawab Shiasta Khan,


a underground tunnel, a large pond. This amazing place is now housing a museum.

Entry Fee: 10Tk for Bangladeshi Entrants and tk.50 Foreign Entrants.

Close Days: Sunday and all other listed government holidays.
Visiting Hours: Monday from 1.30pm-5pm; Tuesday-Saturday, 9am-5pm during October-March; 10am-6pm, during April-September; During Friday the place, remain closed from 12.30pm-2.00pm due to prayer.
